How hot is it?
It's that time of year again, a time where we can pretty much expect heat waves and record temperatures. While many of us welcome the warmer weather, getting overheated on the job is no fun at all. To avoid any heat related incidents, here are a few tips that you can follow to stay safe on hot days:
- Drink plenty of fluids - stick with water, juice, or sports drinks. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
- Find a cool location - if possible, get indoors in an air conditioned room. At the very least, find some shade.
- Don't overdo it - if you're not used to working in the heat, take your time and gradually increase your pace. Even if you're a hot weather warrior, don't ignore how you're feeling. Take a break if your heart is pounding, you're gasping for air, or if you feel faint, confused, weak, or lightheaded.
- Wear appropriate clothing - generally speaking, you want to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes that keep you cooler.
